The Chorists number one

Admissions in France reached an excellent 194,41 million in 2004, the best level since 1983. The 11.6% increase over the previous year was registered thanks a particularly dynamic first semester according to the French film body CNC (Centre National de la Cinematographie).
The number one position at the box office of Gerard Jugnot’s The Chorists (8.6m admissions) symbolized the excellent performance of French films that totalled 74.7 million admissions, up 22.5% from 2003. With a 38.4% market share, French films also reduced their gap from US films’ market-share set at 47.2% in 2004, a significant decrease from US titles’ 52.8% share in 2003.

Four French films were among the top ten titles of the year and eight passed the 2 million admissions cap. 17 other French films attracted over 1 million admissions each and 33 over 500.000 admissions each. The top titles of 2004 include Podium (3.5m admissions), Two Brothers (3.3 million), The 11 commandments (2.9m), L’enquete corse (2.5m), Crimson Rivers 2 (2m) and Mariages (2m).

On the European front, the year results were more modest with an approximate 4% market share. The biggest successes were Bridget Jones: TheEdge of reason (1.7m admissions) and Bad Education (1m).
