NEW RELEASES France

11 new European films on the screen

by

This Wednesday 26th January, French screens are overwhelmed by a series of new feature films coming from everywhere on the Old Continent. The program includes productions from Portugal, Spain, Germany, and Denmark, together with 6 French works and the rerun of a Polish movie. Besides national productions, 11 European films, 4 American ones, a co-production France/Israel, and an Iranian film will be released this week, a cultural diversity hardly equalled in other countries.

One of the most awaited films this week is Luc Jacquet's documentary, La marche de l'Empereur (The Emperor's March) (France). A set of 409 copies will be distributed by BVI. The film was produced by Bonne Pioche in a partnership with APC; Wild Bunch will handle international sales. This film, shot in the Antarctic, depicts one year in the life of a group of emperor penguins on their ice field. A very moving and unexpected account indeed, the penguins made even livelier through the voices of real actors: Charles Berling, Romane Bohringer, and Jules Sitruk. 70 copies of another interesting work will be circulating: Lila dit ça (Lila Says), by Ziad Doueri (France) starring Vahina Giocante and Mohammed Khouas, produced by Huit et Demi, marketed by Pyramide International. This adaptation of an erotic novel dealing with teenage melancolia, the director's second feature film (the first was West Beyrouth, which wan many prizes in 1998) is currently competing in the American film festival of Sundance. Amongst this week's releases, we can also find La vie de Michel Muller est plus belle que la vôtre (M.M.'s Life is Better than Yours), documentaries such as J'aime la vie, je fais du vélo, je vais au cinéma (I Love Life, I Ride a Bike, I go to the Cinema) by Francis Fourcou and Après - Un voyage dans le Rwanda (Aftermath - A Trip to Rwanda) by Denis Gheerbrant, and a co-production France (Ex Nihilo)/ india Matrubhoomi, un monde sans femmes (Matrubhoomi, a Womanless World).

Southern European was not neglected: Haut et Court decided to release 80 copies of the Spanish comedy The Loved Ones ("Seres queridos") by Teresa de Pelegri and Dominic Harari, while Gémini Films will dedicate 30 screens to André Valente (Portugal), Catarina Ruivo's first feature film. Last but not least, Polish cinema will be present through the rerun of a classic: Le manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse (The Manuscript Found in Saragosse) by Wojciech J. Has, for the first time in its full-length version, from the copy restored in 1996 by the Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola's Foundation.
