FESTIVALS France

Greek cinema in Paris

by

Today is the first day of the 4th edition of the Greek Cinema Panorama organised at the Cinéma des cinéastes in Paris par by the ARP (Authors, Directors, and Producers Society) in a partnership with the Greek Embassy in France and the General Greek Consulate in Paris, as well as the Greek Film Centre. This event, which lasts until the 29th of March, means to introduce to a French public not used to seeing much Greek cinema, nine full-length features and five short films selected amongst the latest Greek productions. Pantelis Voulgaris’film Les Mariées (=the brides) was chosen for the opening night, that is, tonight. This production was elected Best Feature at the last Film Festival in Thessalonica ; it was partly funded by Eurimages and by the European Script Fund (depending on the Media Programme).

A Touch of Spice is the other big attraction in the programme. This film, Tassos Boulmetis’ second film, already has a great reputation, with his 10 prizes in Thessalonica, its national success (over $9M in the period end 2003-beginning 2004) and the numerous international sales, for the film is indeed already distributed in Spain, Italy, and Sweden, and it will be released in Germany on the 9th of April. The other films presented in Paris are Kyriakos Katzourakis’ first feature, La route de l'Ouest (2003), Les yeux de la nuit by Pericles Hoursoglou (2003), Torpeur Conjugale by Dimitris Indares (2003), Poussière by Tassos Psarras (2004), Le perdant ramasse tout by Nikos Nikolaïdis (2002), Comme s'il suffisait d'une chanson by Elissavet Chronopoulou (2003), and Delivery by Nikos Panayotopoulos (2003) which competed at the latest Mostra. This is quite a nice window, which, added to the financial improvements announced at the end of 2004 by Petros Tatoulis, the Greek Cultural Affairs Secretary, is a good sign for Greek cinema. As Tatoulis revealed, the Governement intends to support national cinema (co)productions ; a law organising this support will be submitted to Parliament this Spring.
