New York, a gate to the USA

It is in a very favourable context for French cinema in America that the 10th edition of the Rendez-Vous With French Cinema organised by the Lincoln Center Film Society and Unifrance started in New York a week ago and continues for another three days. It consists in a selection of the best French features produced in 2004 and presented here not only for the pleasure of local film pundits, but also to give ten French international sales companies the opportunity to convince American distributors. According to Unifrance, this year’s festival is promising, considering the current success of French movies in America. Indeed, in this respect, 2004 will stay on the record with 40 French films distributed in the U.S.A. for 73 million dollars benefits, which shows that French cinema has reached new audiences. As a matter of fact, despite its unimpressive 1% at the box-office, French cinema is still the most popular foreign cinema in America. This figure only shows how narrow the market is for foreign films, and how difficult it is for them to deal with the inflation and increase promotion and distribution budgets accordingly. In any case, generation after generation, French directors seem to keep up with the reputation of French cinema accross the Atlantic as a quality cinema.
