The Italian film L’orizzonte degli eventi competing this year at the Cannes sidebar Critics Week has been picked up by UK-based sales company The Works. Directed by Daniele Vicari and produced by Domenico Procacci’s Fandango Film, the drama is inspired by Vicari’s own documentary about a group of Macedonian sheperds living in Central Italy under extreme circumstances. Here, the story written by Vicari, Laura Paolucci and Antonio Leotti, focuses on Max, a nuclear physicist who is assigned a high profile project that is the chance of a lifetime. But troubles ensue and Max finds himself in a world far removed from the reality of modern day living. In the lead roles are Valerio Mastandrea and Gwenaelle Simon.

The Icelandic/Canadian/UK co-production Guy X directed by young UK director Saul Metzstein is a dark comedy starring Jason Biggs. The UK/French co-production Wah-Wah is the directorial debut of actor Richard E.Grant; the Italian film Alla luce del sole by Roberto Faenza is produced by Elda Ferri for Jean Vigo Italia (the film was released in Italy by Mikado last January). Gillies Mackinnon’s UK/Irish co-production Tara Road starring Andie Macdowell, Olivia Williams and Iain Glen is the story of two women who embark on a journey of self discovery. Finally The Proposition directed by John Hillcoat is written by music icon Nick Cave. Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone and Emily Watson star in the story of a seemingly impossible proposition made in an attempt to bring an end to a cycle of bloody violence.
