by

Alla luce del sole, by Roberto Faenza, is showing in competition at the 40th Karlovy Vary International Festival (1st-9th July). The film, produced by Elda Ferri for Jean Vigo and distributed by Mikado, is based on the true story of father Puglisi, a priest in Palermo killed by the Mob in 1993. Faenza's film will compete against, amongst others, Le domaine perdu, by Chile-born Raoul Ruiz, a co-production involving France, Romania, Spain, and Italy, starring Bernard Giraudeau and Marisa Paredes.

Michael Radford, President of the jury, will present, out of competition, The Merchant of Venice, co-produced by the Istituto Luce. The section 'Horizons', which presents the winners in Berlin, Cannes, and Venice, will screen, amongst others, Eros, by Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Soderbergh, and Wong Kar-Wai, as well as the Italian co-productions The Sun, by Alexander Sokurov, and Unconscious, by Joaquín Oristrell.

Karlovy Vary has been generous so far to Italian filmmakers: in 2003, Ferzan Ozpetek was awarded a prize for La finestra di fronte and last year, Certi bambini, by the Frazzi brothers, won the Crystal Award.
