The Sgrena case turned into a movie

by

Lionello Cerri's company (Lumiere) will produce Fuoco amico, by Enzo Monteleone. The film is based on the story of the kidnapping (in Irak) and release of the Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena, an incident which caused the death of secret agent Nicola Calipari, killed by American soldiers. The Milan-based producer announced this new project at the Film Professional Days, which are currently taking place in Rome.

Monteleone will write the script in collaboration with the journalist herself (she works for the daily newspaper Il Manifesto) and Pier Scolari from the book they are both writing about the case. “Many things were written about my story,”Giuliana Sgrena commented, “but there are certain aspects of these 28 days that only I know. The film will show these specific moments and my relationship with the kidnappers; it will also deal with what it meant to be a journalist in such a risky situation in that war.”
The film, which should be released next Spring, is an international co-production involving the French company Mars Films (France) and, most likely, some German and Swiss partners.
