Seven European productions on the bill

by

A duel began this Wednesday in the French theatres between Europe and the US as seven films from the Old Continent take on four features from America, among them the monster War of the Worlds. Three French, two British, an Italian production and the co-production Eros attempt to restore audience figures which this year have registered a drop of around 9% according to the National Film Centre (CNC) and 12% according to the exhibitors from FNCF. This low tendency has been confirmed by the Fête du Cinéma (26 to 28 June) which achieved 3,2 million admissions, 25 % spectators less than in 2004 (but 7 % more than 2003).

On the bill this week are two French features which stand out. Screened at the Director's Fortnight at Cannes, La Moustache by Emmanuel Carrère (produced by Les Films des Tournelles with Pathé Renn Productions and France 3 Cinéma) was released with 130 prints by Pathé Distribution, backed by the unanimous acclaim of the critics. For its part, the drama Au suivant! by Jeanne Biras, with Clovis Cornillac and Alexandra Lamy, produced and distributed by EuropaCorp is showing on 220 screens. Look out too for the French film, La nuit de la vérité by Fanta Regina Nacro, distributed with 10 prints by Les Histoires Weba.
