Tulipane – or how friendship saves

by

Tulipane, by the young Polish filmmaker Jacek Borcuch - is one of the 14 European feature films presented in competition at the Brussels European Film Festival.
The film premiere (on the 4th of March,, 2004) represented a genuine surprise for the Polish public. Jacek Boruch, considered as one of the rebels of the young Polish cinema, with whom Kalafiorr caused a wave of productions 'off' in Poland, launched a very concrete project, both in subject and form. The author' strategy is clear: "Tired of a certain idea of contemporary Polish cinema – that of experimentation, blurred images, quick editing – I felt a strong need to create a simple and understandable film. When in a film the form becomes more important than the content, going back to the cinema classical paths becomes a real vocation," explained the filmmaker.

Tulipane is a friendship story between three men whose lives seem fulfilled but who find a new sense to their life and a new energy in what they can mutually give to one and another. The spectator becomes a witness, seeing the moment in life when a man of mature years begins to think of life's weakness as no longer oppressive but rather enriching.
The filmmaker gathered Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polański's best actors: Jan Nowicki, Zygmunt Malanowicz, Małgorzata Braunek (Best Female Performance at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia 2004), and Tadeusz Pluciński. The film is produced by Rats, Studio Filmowe Tor, Produkcja Film IT.
Jacek Borcuch is not the only Polish representative at the Brussels festival. Out of competition, in the Cinédécouvertes section, the Brussels public has been able to see Zawrocony (Torn) by Jacek Filipiak.
