June: - 32,5% fall

The number of spectators in the French cinemas fell spectacularly in June by 32,5% according to the figures published yesterday by National Film Centre (CNC). The last quarter in fact totalled 12,68 million tickets despite la Fête du cinéma which drew 3,2 million cinephiles between the 26th and 28th June. This anaemic result brought the total for the first quarter of 2005 down to 88 million admissions, against a drop of 13,5% compared to the first six months of 2004.

In terms of market share, French production held up, attracting 43,5% of spectators for the first quarter of 2005 against 39,4% for the same period in 2004. American cinema gathered for its part 46,8% tickets for the first six months of the year, films from the rest of the World suffered from this Franco-American with only 9,7% of attendances for the first half of 2005 against 19,2% accumulated between January and June 2004.

As for releases, this Wednesday proposes five European films, among them three French Un vrai bonheur, le film by Didier Caron distributed by UGC with 250 prints, Emmenez-moi by Edmond Bensimon (Mars Distribution ) and Voici venu le temps [+see also:

by Alain Guiraudie for which Ad Vitam released 38 prints. The rest of Europe is represented by two documentaries: Le miracle de Candeal by l’Espagnol Fernando Trueba (Albarès Productions for Colifilms Distribution) and the Turkish-German production Crossing the bridge, the sound of Istanbul by Fatih Akin (MK2 - 11 prints).
