Krzysztof Zanussi in competition?

by

Persona non grata, by Krzysztof Zanussi, may be one of this year's contestants at the Venice Film Festival. This was revealed by the director himself, whose film A Year of the Quiet Sun (Rok spokojnego słońca) won the Golden Lion in 1984. The following year, Zanussi was also a member of the jury, i the company of such great artists as Frank Capra and Eugene Ionesco.

Persona non grata is the story of a Polish diplomat who turns back to his past, to the Solidarnosc years, when tensions between Poland and the USSR reached an apex (cf. making of on Cineuropa). The film, written by Zanussi himself and co-produced by Poland, Russia, and Italy (Istituto Luce), was shot in Warsaw, Moscow, and Uruguay. The famous director Nikita Mikhalkov appears in the movie in the role of a Russian minister.
