FESTIVALS Finland

Mother of Mine in Toronto

by

Klaus Härö’s period drama Mother of Mine is the only Finnish film to represent its home country at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (September 8-17). Selected as part of the festival’s Contemporary World Cinema section, the film will be introduced to the Canadian audience by its director and its producer Ilkka Matila (MRP - Matila & Rohr Productions).

Loosely based on a novel by Heikki Hietamies, the film set in 1943 in a war-torn Finland, describes a beautiful relationship between a mother and her nine-year-old son, Eero. When Eero’s father is killed at the front, the mother makes a painful decision to send her only child to safety in neutral Sweden.
The second feature film by the maker of Elina (2002) which won as many as 30 Finnish and international film awards, is sold internationally by Nordisk Film International Sales. Mother of Mine will be released in Finland on September 30 and in Sweden on November 4.
