DISTRIBUTION Hungary

Budapest Film bets on youth

by

The new season for Hungarian filmgoers was marked by the release in cinemas of two films made by young directors, Roland Vranik and Zsombor Dyga, born respectively in 1976 and 1975. The distributor Budapest Film did not hesitate in launching these two Hungarian talents into cinemas currently monopolised by American production despite a decent impact by French cinema.

Awarded best film at the 36th Hungarian Film Week, the annual shop-window for Hungarian production, with best director of photography and best producers, Black Brush ( Fekete kefe), the first feature from Roland Vranik (assistant-director to Béla Tarr on Les Harmonies Werckmeister) came out in Hungarian cinemas at the beginning of September. Produced by Filmteam, Film Partners and Inforg Stúdió, this black and white film which is set on the rooftops of Budapest follows, with a humour bordering on the absurd, traces the misadventures of four young roofers fed up with their jobs. A laid-back comedy which has so far accumulated 4,5 million forints in receipts in three weeks of distribution and sits still at 16the place in the box-office.

Produced by Akna Film, Duna Workshop and Mediawave 2000, this comedy from a filmmaker who got himself noticed with his first feature Teso is all about a suitcase which different people are looking for but for different reasons.

Heavily dominated by US films, the Hungarian box-office has, however, welcomed some French cinema successes. After Man to man by Régis Wargnier (4,8 million forints of receipts in August), it is Les Poupées russes [+see also:
