BOX OFFICE Slovakia

Genesis upsets Hollywood hegemony

by

Not surprisingly US productions dominate the top-20 of the Slovak box office for the period September 29 – October 5. Surprisingly, the one European production that seems to upset them is a documentary.

Marie Pérennou and Claude Nuridsany’s French feature Genesis, produced by Les Films Alain Sarde, Les Films de la Véranda, R.T.I. with Canal +, entered in fourth place in a box office which is led by the American blockbusters Dark Water, The Wedding Crashers and Mr and Mrs Smith. All four films had just a cumulative result of just over 11,000 tickets for the period in question. A film with a French connection, Emir Kusturica’s Life is a Miracle (“Zivot je cudo”), now in its third week in Slovak theatres, is found in ninth place with just under 1000 tickets.

Other European productions currently in distribution are way down the top-20 list, including the three Czech films that were shown in Slovak theatres till October 5; Tomas Vorel’s grotesque comedy The Imp (“Skritek”), Petr Nikolaev’s romantic comedy A Little Piece of Heaven (“Kousek nebe”) and Jiri Svoboda’s real-life-inspired thriller The New Breed (“Sametovi vrazi”). The three of them combined for less than 1000 admissions!
Slovak attendances continue a downwards trend. With an average of 22.7 admissions per performance the numbers are far from encouraging although the good news are that this number is slightly improved compared to the total September average (20.8).
