RELEASES Spain

3 national films opening this week

by

While Torrente 3: El Protector remains the most successful Spanish film at the national box office (7.216.335d'Euros only in the first week), three other Spanish titles open this week: Sinfín, Fragiles and 7 Vírgenes, one of the films most discussed at the last San Sebastian International Film Festival,.

Produced by Lolafilms, Sinfín is a comedy about the reunion of a band, almost 10 years after the death (by overdose) of its lead singer. Starring Dani Martín, Armando del Río, Nancho Novo and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, the film was co-directed by Manuel Sanabria and Carlos Villaverde, responsible for the box office hit La Fiesta, their first feature film.

For its part, Filmax releases Fragiles. Written and directed by Jaume Balagueró, the horror film stars Calista Flockhart, in a very different role from the comic register that brought her fame in Ally McBeal. The American actress plays Amy, a nurse who arrives at Mercy Falls children hospital. It seems there is something weird scaring the young patients, something that the children call the mechanical girl. The ghosts from Fragiles were co-produced by Castelao Productions, Just Films and Future Film .

However, the most eagerly awaited Spanish release is of course Alberto Rodríguez's new film 7 Vírgenes (read the article). The film has a non professional cast, except for 17 year's old Juan José Ballesta, who won the Silver Shell for the best actor in the last San Sebastian International Film Festival. Produced by Tesela and La Zanfoña Producciones, is distributed by Alta Films.

Besides the three Spanish films, the public can also discover two other European co-productions: the controversial Battle in Heaven de Carlos Reygadas, and Transporter 2, a film directed by Louis Leterrier, written and produced by Luc Besson and distributed by Hispano Foxfilm.
