Flamenco legend on the big screens

may be the major European titles opening this week in Spain, but the two British films will have to share the public attention with one of the most anticipated Spanish biopics of the year: Camarón by Jaime Chávarri.

With Óscar Jaenada (Goya nominee in 2004 for Achero Mañas's Noviembre) in the lead part, Camarón follows the life of flamenco legend "Camarón de la Isla", from his childhood in Cadiz till his death from cancer at the age of 41. By the director and Álvaro del Amo, the script was written in close collaboration with the singer's family and colleagues (musicians such as Paco de Lucía and Tomatito) and it doesn't hide controversial aspects of the singer's life such as his addition to drugs. Shot in Madrid, Cadiz and New York, Camarón was co-produced by Monoria Films and Filmanova Invest. Buena Vista International handles local distribution.

Also on the bill are the French-Moroccan co-production Le grand voyage by Ismäel Ferroukhi (a Ognon Pictures production distributed by Guia Films), and three other Spanish titles: A golpes by Juan Vicente Córdoba (produced by Enrique Cerezo P.C. and distributed by Columbia TriStar) Luis de la Madrid's thriller La Monja (produced by Fantastic factory and distributed by Filmax) and Oculto, a Zebra Producciones film which Antonio Hernández shot before starting The Borgia project.
