Rise in admissions for national films

The beginning of a new year is the time to do a revision of the previous one regarding the performance of Spanish titles in the national box office. In 2005 admissions dropped 12, 7% (the equivalent of 122,2 M€; the lowest result since 1998), however national films made a splash, raising its total admissions by 16%. American films, with Star Wars III at the top of the list, remain the most successful among the Spaniards but, unlike national films, their market share dropped from 69% to 61%.

Whether we like it or not Santiago Segura's style, Torrente 3, El Protector, released September 29 by UIP, is the inevitable success of 2005. 18,1 M€ gross placed it among the top Spanish titles and gave it the third position in the general list of most-seen films of the previous year.
Two co-productions with the USA, Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven (distribution: Fox) and Breck Eisner's Sahara (BVI), reached the third and seventh positions, grossing respectively 11,9 M€ and 3,8 M€. Auteur films found their space to thanks to Fernando León de Aranoa's Princesas (Warner Sogefilms; 5,7 M€), which made third position. Comedy El penalty mas largo del mundo (Alta Films; 5 M€) comes in fourth, followed by 7 Virgens (Alta Films; 4,3 M€) and by Los dos lados de la Cama [+see also:

, which, since its release on December 23rd, reached an amazing sixth position (BVI ; 3,9 M€). The last positions are occupied by the first feature by José Carbacho and Juan Cruz, Tapas (Sogedasa; 3,7 M€), by the Benito Zambrano's musical Habana Blues [+see also:

2006 is also expected to be a good year for Spanish film with thanks to the première of some long awaited titles, among them the new films by Almodóvar, Volver [+see also:
