FESTIVALS Germany

Cinema and football In Berlin

by

As Germany prepares to host the 2006 World Cup, Berlin is hosting the third International Festival of Cinema and Football, "11mm" (March 4-11, 2006). For the first time, the festival, which will be held at the Kino Central de Hackeschen Markt, will screen films from five continents, some of which will be world or national premieres.

The event allows film lovers as well as football fans to appreciate the game on the big screen and to rediscover its history through films such as Das Grosse Spiel by Robert Stemmle (1942), which shows the Olympic stadium in Berlin more than half a century ago, as well as First Swallow (Pirveli mertskhali), shot in Georgia by Nana Mchedlidze in 1975.

As for new films, Frenchman Stéphane Meunier will see his TV documentary Les yeux dans les bleus, about the World Cup winners of 1998, screen in the theatre for the first time in Germany, and Berlin’s Mirko Richter will present his first feature, Gedrehte Tore, which focuses on multi-culturalism in sport.

In fact, this event, which transcends all cultural borders, creates interesting ties between football and the seventh art, and can only benefit the latter, by attracting an audience normally used to the small screen and by inviting the major sporting events to return the favour to the seventh art.
