Magma makes Irish/Swedish co-production

Magma Films , one of Ireland’s leading film, TV and animation production companies is co-producing with Sweden’s Fido Film AB a new comedy/drama by Martin Duffy, the director of The Boy From Mercury. The family comedy/drama Summer of the Flying Saucer, based on a script by Icelandic-born Marteinn Thorisson (Karlsson On the Roof), will start shooting in Ireland next September.

Set during the summer of 1967, it tells the story of a 15 year-old Catholic boy who falls in love with an alien girl. The €2m project is being produced by Magma Fims (which has a 76% stake) and Fido Film (24%), one of the largest animation and special effects orientated company in Scandinavia, which will handle all the special effects and post-production work on the film.

Summer of the Flying Saucer was supported by the Irish Film Board, Eurimages and will be distributed in Ireland by Eclipse and in Sweden by Sonet Film, with Germany’s Telepool handling the rest of the world.

Run by German-born Ralph Christians, Magma Films is based in Galway and its German subsidiary Ulysse Film has offices in Munich and Hamburg. Magma and Ulysse recently co-produced, together with Denmark’s A Film and France’s Futurikon, the animated film Ugly Duckling & Me [+see also:

, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale. The film, directed by Michael Hegner and Karsten Killerich, is currently in post-production.
