FESTIVALS Italy / Spain

Not just Almodóvar

by

To show off the lesser known side of quality Spanish films, from emerging filmmakers perhaps somewhat overshadowed by the international success of Pedro Almodóvar, four archives (Cineteca del Comune di Bologna, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Cineteca Italiana) have teamed up with the Istituto Cervantes and the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación de España.

Their initiative is a festival of sorts called "Carlos Saura y el nuevo cine español" that will take place in seven Italian cities between April 13 and May 15. Besides the director who has contributed more than any other in guiding Spanish cinema from the last stages of Francoism to democracy, the event is a collection debut and second films by new, original directors such as David Serrano, Achero Mañas, Fernando León de Aranoa, Julio D. Wallovits, Roger Gual, Achero Mañas, Mercedes Álvarez, Benito Zambrano, Manuel Martín Cuenca, Ángeles González Sinde, Jaime Rosales, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Josè Luis Guerin.

The first stop will be the Trevi Cinema in Rome, until April 23. After that the festival will continue on to Milan (Cinema Spazio Oberdan, Cineteca Italiana), Bologna (Cinema Lumière 1), Florence (Cinema Auditorium Stensen, Cinema Alfieri Atelier), Genoa (Cinema Sivori), Turin (Cinema massimo), and Parma (Cinema Edison D’Essay).
