KARLOVY VARY IFF Bulgaria

Six stories around one tree

by

A Christmas tree being transported from the mountains of Sofia is at the heart of six stories that make up Christmas Tree Upside Down (Obarnata elha) by Ivan Cherkelov and Vassil Zhivkov, the Bulgarian film in competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (June 30-July 8).

The film, which depicts the social climate of post-socialist Bulgaria through the exploration of the existential dilemmas of people of different ages and backgrounds, is a co-production between Bulgaria’s Klasfilm and Germany’s Filmkombinat Nordost, which made Christmas Tree Upside Down for a mere €900,000 (see the film’s making of).

There is another Bulgarian film in the East of the West section: Monkeys in Winter (Maimuni prez zimata), directed by Milena Andonova and produced by Tatfilm, once again in co-production with Germany, in which three interwoven stories realistically depict the 1960s and 70s through today.

Both films will be distributed in Bulgaria within the year.
