VENICE 2006 Career Golden Lion

David Lynch’s cursed star

by

A Hollywood star shooting the remake of a "cursed" film is the main character of the latest film by David Lynch, INLAND EMPIRE, which had its in world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where the US director will receive a Career Golden Lion.

Playing the film’s diva is Laura Dern, the star of Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. The actress acted in each scene without ever knowing the structure of this new masterpiece, in which the dramatic twists and turns follow one another without any apparent logic yet in which the organised chaos of Lynch’s films offers a one-way ticket to the dark side of cinema.

INLAND EMPIRE was produced by France’s Canal +, which has financed other films by Lynch, along with the director’s long-time producer Mary Sweeney, in collaboration with the Polish festival Cammerimage.

It was when visiting the Polish festival that Lynch had the idea of shooting the majority of his film in Lódz, using local actors, including Karolina Gruszka, Krzysztof Majchrzak, Leon Niemczyk and Piotr Andrzejewski.

"The festival organisers and I became immediate friends. I asked if I could come shoot a scene of the film there, I chose actors from Warsaw, the scene was translated and shot in one day. I watched Piotr Andrzejewski closely and thought he could play Laura Dern’s husband and, at that point, Poland became a large part of the film", said Lynch during a press conference this afternoon in Venice.

The film will be released in Poland in the autumn by Kino Świat and in Italy by BIM in early 2007. The release date in Germany is set for January 11.
