ANIMATION Europe

Cartoon Forum ends with mission accomplished

by

Seven hundred and fifty animation industry professionals attended the 17th Cartoon Forum, which took place in Pau from September 20-23. The three-day event – aimed at advancing the production, distribution and financing of European animation series for TV – gave representatives of over 100 broadcasters the opportunity to watch the upcoming animation projects produced in Europe.

Twenty-five projects received guarantees to close funding through the end of the year, an amount of up to €100m. The most successful projects included Pocket Rockers (Millimages, France; Toons ‘N’ Tales, Germany; and Millimages UK); Bingo Bongo (Lobster, France; JetMedia, Letonia; and Sofidoc, Belgium); Jeremy (Futurikon, France); High Spy (Alphanim, France); and The Annoying Thing (League of Good People, UK, and Kaktus Films, Sweden).

Organised for the first time this year, the Cartoon Tributes - aimed at paying homage to production companies contributing positively to the development of the European animation film industry – awarded three companies: Danish outfit A. Film was named Producer of the Year, Spain's Icon Film was deemed Investor of the Year and the UK's BBC Children, Broadcaster of the Year.

Lastly, Cartoon Forum was also an occasion to present the Cartoon d'Or 2006 – the only European prize for short animation films – to Joanna Quinn's Dreams and Desires, which beat out Guillaume Delaunay's Nocturne, Saschka Unseld and Johannes Weiland's Olis Chance, Oury Atlan, Thibaut Berland and Damien Ferrié’s Overtime, and Regina Pessoa's A Tragic Story With a Happy Ending (see news).

The 18th Cartoon Forum is set to take place from September 19-22, 2007 in the Catalonian city of Girona, Spain.
