A weekend “Made in Italy”

As anticipation mounts for next week’s release of The Family Friend by Paolo Sorrentino, this weekend is marked by four new Italian films, three of which premiered at the recent RomeFilmFest.

After a warm reception at the Rome fest, Salvatore - Questa è la vita (lit. “Salvatore: This is the Life”), the directorial debut of the Gian Paolo Cugno and the first Italian production by Buena Vista International, opened last Wednesday. Starring Giancarlo Giannini, Enrico Lo Verso and 12 year-old Alessando Mallia, the children’s film is based on a true story, about a young orphan who suddenly finds himself having to provide for the remaining members of his family.

Having tackled the phenomenon of “mobbing” in her previous film, in A casa nostra [+see also:

(lit. “At Our House”) Francesca Comencini depicts a Milan in which the stories of several characters whose lives are governed by money intertwine (see article).

Roberto Andò’s Viaggio segreto [+see also:

(lit. “Secret Journey”), on the other hand, is a dramatic family saga based on Josephine Hart’s best-selling novel The Reconstruction (see article).

Lastly, the debut feature by Massimo Cappelli, Il giorno + bello (lit. “The Best Day”), is a light comedy on marriage and weddings, starring rising actors Violante Placido and Fabio Troiano (see article).
