Annual Europa Cinemas conference in Paris

The 11th annual conference of the Europa Cinemas network, which includes 644 cinemas and 1,554 screens in 359 cities begins today in Paris.

Network President Claude Miller and Director General Claude-Eric Poiroux (see interview) will open the event along with representatives of the European Commission, the CNC and the City of Paris. Professionals will then begin the first debate of the programme: Distributors – Exhibitors: Liberty, Solidarity, Diversity!.

Held by Pascal Rogard (SACD) in the presence of CNC Assistant General Director Anne Durupty, the discussion will open with a presentation by Daniel Goudineau of his report Farewell Film? The Challenges of Digital Cinema (see news 1 and 2) while Thomas Pintzke will provide a detailed study on economic models conducted by Rinke Medien Consult.

Other contributors include Christophe Rossignon (Nord-Ouest Production), president of the German exhibitors association Thomas Negele and his French counterpart Jean Labé of the FNCF, Peter Buckingham of the UK Film Council, distributor Régine Vial (Les Films du Losange) and Nico Simon (general director of the Luxembourg exhibitors group Utopia).

A choice of two workshops will take place on Saturday. The first – In Search of Equitable Economic Models for Digital Cinema – will be held by Anders Geertsen (Danish Film Institute) with participation from distributors from the UK (Edward Fletcher, Soda Pictures), Holland (Marcus van der Zwaag, Cinemien); and Norway, (Age Hoffart, Oro Film), as well as from the director of the Danish producers association Klaus Hansen and Patrick von Sychowski (director of Digital Business Development Deluxe Europe).

The second workshop – How to increase the potential of European productions in theatres? – will be held by distributors Stefan de Potter (Cinéart-Cinélibre, Belgium), Isabelle Dubar (ID Distribution, France), Antonio Medici (BIM Distribuzione, Italy), Marcin Piasecki (Kino Świat, Poland), Jean-Jacques Varret (Les Films du Paradoxe, France), exhibitor Linda Pariser (Cornerhouse, UK), Enrique Gonzales Macho (exhibitor and distributor at Renoir Cinemas and Alta Films, respectively, Spain), as well as Germany’s Johannes Klingsporn (director of Verband der Deutschen Filmverleiher) and André Lange of the European Audiovisual Observatory.

Sunday morning will be dedicated to Europa Cinemas projects with an analysis of the changes in the guidelines for the 2007 MEDIA Plus programme.
