GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS 2007 Nominees

Fifty-six foreigners, including Eastwood and Gibson

by

Numerous European films are vying for the shortlist nominations for the 64th edition of the Golden Globe Awards along with Letters from Iwo Jima by Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, which are considered to be foreign titles as the film’s spoken languages are Japanese and Mayan, respectively.

The final five nominees will be revealed on December 14 and the awards ceremony will take place on January 15 in Los Angeles.

This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has selected six Italian titles (Along the Ridge, The Caiman, The Family Friend, Mario’s War, The Missing Star and Golden Door, the latter which was co-produced with France), three French films (Avenue Montaigne (Fauteuils d'orchestre), Angel-A, La Doublure) and three German films (The Last Train, The Lives of Others, Requiem). Spain is being represented by Alatriste and Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver.

Other European productions that have a good chance of entering the final five, which are unanimously considered to be forerunners for the Oscars, include After the Wedding by Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier, Norway’s Reprise, Hungary’s Children of Glory, Black Book by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, Grbavica by Bosnia’s Jasmila Zbanic, Polish title Retrieval and Swiss film Vitus.
