According to the National Film Office (NFI), the number of national films produced in Hungary rose from 115 in 2005 to 233 in 2006, a staggering increase, which, according to professionals, is due in most part to the combined effect of significantly high state support for the production of films made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1956 events (including the emblematic Children of Glory [+see also:

Other influential factors have been the film law that came into effect in April 2004, as well as the impact of its tax deductions mechanisms, which have led to a three-fold increase in Hungarian production spending over three years.

Production spending on these 233 films totalled €97m in 2006, €10.1m of which gives access to the Hungarian system of tax deductions. There were 210 100% Hungarian productions in 2006 (compared to 85 in 2005) and investment has literally doubled to €38.6m.

However, the number of co-productions was down from 16 to 10 films, with €12.9m of expenses in Hungary. Although the number of foreign films made in Hungary has seen a small increase from 12 to 13, their expenses have decreased from €20m in 2005 to €12.9m in 2006.
