by Krisztina Goda (produced and distributed by Intercom, see news) has become the biggest Hungarian hit of 2006, doing better than Just Sex and Nothing Else (see article), the debut feature by the young director, released at the end of 2005 on 32 screens through HungariCom with total admissions of 407,000 and a 331m forint gross.

The third most popular local production was Péter Rudolf’s Glass Tiger 2 (see news), which opened in January through Budapest Film on 37 screens, with 304,000 admissions a 268m forint gross (approximately €1m). The fourth most popular Hungarian title this year was Istvan Szabo’s Relatives (dist. Intercom) with 186,000 admissions.

Goda, 36, who studied direction at the British National Film and Television School and scriptwriting at UCLA in Los Angeles, has got off to a sensational start in Hungarian cinema. With two films – a subtly treated comedy and a big budget historical epic – the young director has worked with two of the most powerful Hungarian producers – Gabor Kalomista (Megafilm Ltd) and Andrew G. Vajna (Intercom) – experts in commercial hits and reputed for their interventionism; a successful association for a director whose next project is awaited with bated breath.
