11/07/2002 - A rank outsider's travelogue, Elsewhere comes hot on SpiderMan's heels in Austria

Austrian filmgoers enjoyed an unexpected bonus this summer with a low budget small documentary by Nikolaus Geyhalter entitled Elsewhere. First released a fortnight ago onto just one screen nationwide (in Vienna) the film attracted over 4000 filmgoers and is second only to SpiderMan in the national top ten.
Elsewhere is an episodic film about a 12-month journey made by Geyhalter to some of the world´s most remote places including Nigeria, Finland, Namibia, Greenland, Australia and China to study the socio-cultural set-up. The film covers complex issues like polygamy, the difference between each country´s work habits and examines China´s largely matriarch-driven society.
