Marais and Kaplers awarded in Rotterdam

In an unprecedented decision, the jury of the Rotterdam International Film Festival presented the VPRO Tiger Awards to four films this year rather than the usual three. The winners are Love Conquers All by Malaysian director Tan Chui Mui, The Unpolished [+see also:

by Germany's Pia Marais, Bog of Beasts by Brazilian director Claudio Assis and AFR by Denmark's Morten Hartz Kaplers.

Each Tiger carries a €10,000 prize and the films will be broadcast by Dutch public television network VPRO.

Produced by Pandora Film and sold internationally by The Match Factory, Marais’ debut feature was described as having "emotive power" and being "a nuanced portrayal of a young girl trying to find meaning in a society that has lost all sense of direction."

AFR, also a feature debut, was seen by the jury as a "well-crafted polemical film, which utilizes a conceptual approach that comments on the blurring of reality and fiction". The film was produced by Liberty Films and Trust Film Sales will handle international sales.

by Joachim Trier (Movie Squad Award), while the Spanish production Me (Yo) by Rafa Corte won the FIPRESCI Award.
