RELEASES Germany

Schlöndorff and Solidarity

by

Out of today’s nine new releases (including three German titles), Volker Schlöndorff’s new film Strike is guaranteed to attract attention.

Scripted by Andreas Pflüger and Sylke Rene Meyer and scored by Jean-Michel Jarre (The Tin Drum), the film depicts a woman who changed history.

Its heroine, Agnieszka (Katharina Thalbach), is a strong and spiritual crane-driver on the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk. Despite numerous crises, she refuses to be suppressed, which is what gets her unfairly fired. Outraged, all her colleagues go on strike, followed by all the factories in Poland. Solidarity is born.

The German/Polish co-production is being released by Progress.

German audiences can also choose from a children's film and a story about a German family. Peter Timm's Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel 2 is the story of a friendship between a small boy abandoned by his widowed father (Sebastian Koch) and a playful little pig.

Produced by Relevant Film Produktion, the title is being distributed by Warner.

Meanwhile, distributor Zorro is releasing Bummm! - Your Family, the Battlefield, a comedy-drama by Alain Gsponer, co-produced by Munich-based Burkert Bareiss Development and TV 60 Filmproduktion.

Starring Ulrich Noethen and Katja Riemann as Mr and Mrs Spatz, the film is about a family that gets hit by redundancy, relationship problems and disruptive children – all at once, it seems.

The only other new European release of the week is a Swiss documentary (dist. Kinostar), Christian Labhart's Zum Abschied Mozart (lit. "Time to Say Goodbye"), which follows a young choir preparing Mozart's Requiem for a grand recital.
