Summer hopes to reach all audiences

, the debut feature by Nanna Huolman, is the new domestic film opening through FS Film Oy today on 14 screens across the country, in the hopes of reaching beyond its target audience of women aged 25-44.

“We’ve received four-star reviews in most women’s weekly magazines”, said Janne Halme, head of marketing of Finnish films at FS Film, who has supervised the film’s campaign, which included press, TV and radio advertising.

Set in 1984, the film focuses on 12 year-old “Kid”, a girl who lives on a council estate in Göteborg with her single, Finnish mother who hardly speaks a word of Swedish. Her mother wants to take her back to Finland for the summer holidays on a road trip with her best friend and her teenage son, but Kid would rather stay in Göteborg where she has a chance to work for a local radio station. However, what starts as a trip from hell turns into a coming-of-age experience for Kid, who learns to accept her mother and her own origins.

Launched at the latest Göteborg Film Festival, where it won SEK 50,000 and the Church of Sweden Film Prize, the film was described by the jury as "a powerful and sympathetic account of Sweden in the 1980s, with great resonance in today's multi-ethnic Sweden".

2006 Swedish Producer on the Move Helen Ahlsson initiated the project with Huolman following their successful collaboration on the short film Flamingo (2003). “The film is very much inspired by Nanna’s own childhood because she is a second generation Finn living in Sweden”, she said.

That Special Summer was produced by Ahlsson’s Swedish outfit Tre Vänner in co-production with Jarkko Hentula (Juonifilm) in Finland, SVT, Film i Väst and Svensk Filmindustri; in cooperation with YLE, TV1, Canal + and EFFC; and with support from the Swedish Film Institute and the Finnish Film Foundation.

The Swedish release is set for October 2007 and international sales are being handled by Trust Film Sales.
