, French production outfit Fidélité Production continues its spate of English-language films, with today’s launch of Afterwards, the third feature by Gilles Bourdos (1999’s Disparus and 2004’s A Sight for Sore Eyes), starring Romain Duris, John Malkovich and Canada’s Evangeline Lilly (star of the series Lost).

Adapted from Guillaume Musso’s novel Et Après, the film – scripted by the director and his long-term partner Michel Spinosa (Anna M. [+see also:

) – borders on the line between psychological thriller and fantasy.

At the age of eight, Nathan (Duris) – now a brilliant New York lawyer – experienced an unusual incident. After diving into a frozen lake to save a young girl, he suffered a heart attack and was considered clinically dead before miraculously coming back to life.

Although he married the girl he saved (Lilly), he had succeeded in wiping the unfortunate episode from his memory. The couple’s marriage is threatened when the rich and handsome Nathan reaches the top of his career.

Then appears the enigmatic character of doctor Goodrich, who claims to have the power to predict people’s death.

Against his will, Nathan finds himself mixed up in Goodrich’s life, witnessing suicides, murders and learning disturbing truths about his life and his past. In reality, Goodrich’s aim is to prepare Nathan, who discovers at his own expense that the accident at the lake had important consequences on his life and those close to him and that no-one comes back to life without a reason.

Produced by Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc for Fidélité, the €10m Afterwards is being co-produced by Canada’s Christal Films. The 45-day shoot will take place in New York and New Mexico before heading to Montreal on July 7 for a 25-day studio shoot.

The film will be released in France in 2008 through Wild Bunch, who is also handling international sales.
