Producer/financier Costa Theo’s Milcoz Films has acquired a $1m equity stake in the UK sales, financing and distribution company the Works Media Group. The deal secures a 14% share of the company for Theo and a non-executive director seat on the Works board.

With the completion of this deal, Milcoz, whose parent company the Theta Group has substantial businesses across West Asia, will get an entry into the potentially lucrative UK market.

Milcoz’ previous film credits include Robert Heath’s Out on a Limb and James Keach’s Blind Dating. The Works on their part have been busy acquiring titles for UK distribution. They recently acquired all UK rights for Mee Shee: The Water Giant, the 2005 Anglo-German co-production by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop from ContentFilm.

The $27 million family interest film about the relationship between a boy and a lake monster by Jim Henderson was shot in New Zealand and stars Bruce Greenwood and Rena Owen.

The film was originally titled Ogopogo after a legendary Canadian water creature similar to the Loch Ness monster. However, Canadian aboriginal representatives protested saying that the legend was too holy and writer Barry Authors was forced to change the title to Mee Shee. The film was warmly received by critics and audiences worldwide and will finally see a UK release thanks to the Works acquisition.

The Works have also acquired Steve Buscemi’s Interview, starring Sienna Miller, where a jaded journalist tries to revive his career by interviewing a popular soap star. In addition, the company has also picked up David Nerlich and Andrew Traucki’s Black Water, a thriller where a group of fishing enthusiasts have to survive a crocodile attack in the mangrove swamps of Northern Australia.
