De Oliveira, two years later…

by

As the Venice Film Festival announces Manoel de Oliveira’s new film Cristovao Colombo – O enigma, hitting Italian screens today is his Espelho Magico, in competition on the Lido two years ago.

The film, distributed by Mikado and produced by Filbox Produções Audivisuais with a contribution from ICAM (Instituto do Cinema Audiovisual e Multimedia) and RTP (Radiotelevisão Portuguesa), marked de Oliveira’s divorce with Paulo Branco, the Portuguese maestro’s historical producer.

Based on the novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís, Espelho Magico tells the story of Alfreda, who lives in anticipation of the apparition of the Madonna. Lead actress Leonor Silveira is flanked by Marisa Paredes and some of the usual faces of de Oliveira’s films, from Ricardo Trepa to Michel Piccoli.

Mediafilm continues its run of broad comedies, mostly from Germany. Out on 65 prints today is Mathias Dinter’s Maial Zombie, a horror parody produced by Constantin Film Produktion and Hofmann & Voges Entertainment.

Set on a Wyoming ranch, Michael Mayer’s Flicka (released on 20 screens by Fox) was co-produced by the UK’s Zucker-Netter Productions and promises beautiful landscapes and heartwarming emotions.

Italy is present this weekend with Angelo Frezza’s Sweet Sweet Marja, a comedy with Maria Grazia Cucinotta on the effects of a meal laced with marijuana. Due P.T. Cinematografica is distributing it on four screens.
