Fremaux reaches top echelon of Cannes

by

Artistic director since 2002 of the Cannes Film Festival and head of programming since 2004, Thierry Fremaux has been named president of the high-profile event.

His promotion, which was approved by the French Ministry of Culture and Foreign Affairs, will give Fremaux further control over the festival.

"After seven festivals as artistic director ... he has my confidence and my support. This nomination allows us – and this is my main objective – to assure the future under the best conditions,” said currrent festival president Gilles Jacob.

Fremaux will be only the festival’s fourth president, following previous title holders Robert Favre-Le Bret, Maurice Bessy and Jacob, and is seen as the natural successor to the current president.

The 61st edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14-25, 2008.
