New Cinema Fund backs raft of British projects

The UK Film Council’s New Cinema Fund has awarded £520,000 towards the production of Kidulthood [+see also:

writer and star Noel Clarke’s feature debut Adulthood. Shooting begins early October.

Clarke reprises his role from Kidulthood and the new film will follow his character as he is released from prison. George Isaac and Damian Jones are producing the film, which is also backed by Pathé and Independent.

In addition, Kenny Glenaan, the award-winning director of Yasmin and Gas Attack, is to receive £450,000 for his under production friendship saga Summer.

Other partners on the project include Cinema Two, EM Media, Scottish Screen , Glasgow Film Office, Mediopolis Köln, Filmstiftung NRW, and Hewland International. The Works International are handling international sales while Vertigo are the UK distributors.

Lenny Crooks, head of the New Cinema Fund said, “We want to support distinctive filmmakers in developing and sustaining their work at every stage of their career. As an actor moving on to becoming a director Noel Clarke is on a fast trajectory with an awareness and resourcefulness to match his talent. And what I think is so exciting about Kenny Glenaan is that he challenges the limits of social realism with his unique imagination.”

Glue director Alexis dos Santos receives £428,396 for his quirky London-set Unmade Beds, where the story of a man’s search for his father is interwoven with a woman’s search for love. The Bureau , Film4 and EM Media are the other backers. Shooting begins October.

Mark Tonderai’s debut Hush, made through the Fund’s Warp X digital studio, receives £299,983.

The Fund is also supporting five projects that have emerged from the Cinema Extreme shorts scheme: Alex and Her Arse Truck, Island, Much Ado About a Minor Ting, New Love and Navel receive £25,000 each.
