, which screened last week at the Toronto Film Festival, has been chosen as Austria's candidate as one of the potential nominees for the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

The drama – based on a true story and which competed at Berlin earlier this year – is a joint production between Austria (Aifilm - Josef Aichholzer Filmproduktion) and Germany (Magnolia Filmproduktion GmbH , Studio Babelsberg), which received public funding on both sides of the border. It also won seven nominations at the Lolas (German Film Prize), including a Best Supporting nomination for Devid Striesow.

The Counterfeiters (also starring Karl Markovics and August Diehl) follows a group of Jewish prisoners forced by the Nazis to manufacture counterfeit money in the hope of escaping death.

If Ruzowitzky’s film gets the nod from the Hollywood Academy on January 22 to be one of the five finalists it will not be the director’s first time on the other side of the Atlantic. Before this feature, Ruzowitzky co-produced All the Queen's Men (2001) in the States, as well as Anatomy (2000) and Anatomy 2 (2003). The prestigious Oscars ceremony will take place at the Kodak Theatre on February 24, 2008.
