The Mother honoured at Leipzig
The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) Television Award of the 50th Dok Leipzig Festival was given on November 4 to The Mother, a Swiss/French/Russian co-production directed by Antoine Cattin and Pavel Kostomarov. The Swiss/Russian duo received a Silver Dove Award at Leipzig in 2004 for their previous film, Vivre en paix (“Live In Peace”).
The jury of the international documentary competition had this to say: “We are given a rare and intense glimpse into the life of a mother of nine children living in a rural part of the Russian provinces. Daily life, for which women shoulder the primary responsibility, is harsh and sad, and yet filled with energy, joy and love. Liouba protects, argues, cries and laughs as her mood changes at an alarming rate. The camerawork and editing at all times immerses us as viewers in the whirlwind of events and twists of fate.”.
