9mm wraps up

After making several films with his trusty sidekick Mourad Boucif, including the acclaimed documentary La Couleur du Sacrifice (“The Colour of Sacrifice”), Taylan Barman is now embarking on a feature whose screenplay he co-wrote with Kenan Gorgun.

After 26 days in Belgium and Lille, the shooting of 9mm wraps up this week. Starring French actor Serge Riaboukine and Belgian actors Anne Coessens (Cages [+see also:

Characters include an unemployed man who sinks into depression; a woman torn between her work, her moody adolescent son and a husband to whom she has nothing left to say; and a silent young boy fleeing a home where nobody communicates with each other anymore, who seeks solace in a group of older and more vindictive youths. Each member of the family seems to gradually retreat further into themselves.

But the story really begins when a gunshot is fired behind a door. Who fired it? Why? Made up of long shots and flooded with natural light, the film, which aims for a realist aesthetic, retraces the course of events and analyses each character’s perspective leading up to that dramatic incident, building up the tension and suspense without any air of tragedy to predict such an outcome.

Produced by Saga Film for around €1.8m, 9mm is co-produced by Belgian companies RTBF (Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française) and Media Invest, and France’s Dolce Vita.

The film received financial support from the French Community of Belgium, Vlaams Audiovisuel Fonds (VAF) and the CRRAV.
