Atonement leads Brit-pack at Globe nominations

dominated the nominations for the 65th annual Golden Globe awards with seven nods. The film will slug it out in the best motion picture – drama category with British director Ridley Scott’s American Gangster and UK/Canada co-production Eastern Promises [+see also:

The other contenders are The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood. This year, the category was expanded to seven because of a three-way tie for the fifth spot.

Atonement also garnered nominations for Keira Knightley (Best Actress in a Drama), James McAvoy (Best Actor in a Drama), Saoirse Ronan (Best Supporting Actress), Joe Wright (Best Director), Christopher Hampton (Best Screenplay) and Dario Marianelli (Best Score).

Britain’s strong showing was also reflected in nominations across the board. Daniel Day-Lewis was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for There Will Be Blood, while Elizabeth: The Golden Age [+see also:

was honoured in the form of a best actress in a drama nomination for Cate Blanchett.

British film legend Julie Christie was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama for Away From Her and Helena Bonham-Carter scored a nod for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In addition, Ridley Scott was nominated for Best Director for American Gangster.

European cinema dominated the foreign language category with acclaimed Romanian film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days [+see also:

The British march continued in the television nominations with Minnie Driver, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anna Friel, Ruth Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Jason Isaacs, James Nesbitt, Jim Broadbent, Samantha Morton and Andy Serkis picking up acting nods.
