(“The Past is a Foreign Land”) by Daniele Vicari, based on the eponymous best-selling novel by Gianrico Carofiglio, the current substitute anti-Mafia prosecutor in the Apulian capital.

The film is produced by Fandango and R&C (run by Tilde Corsi and Gianni Romoli) in collaboration with RAI Cinema and the Apulia Film Commission (founded just over three months ago).

It stars Elio Germano, Italy’s Shooting Star at the upcoming Berlinale, as Giorgio, a 22 year-old model law student, until the day he meets Francesco (Michele Riondino), a mysterious fellow student who introduces him to the world of gambling houses and poker and teaches him how to cheat.

Carofiglio co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Francesco, Massimo Gaudioso and the director. "I took on an adventure with Vicari,” he said. “It was immediately understood for both of us that the screenplay would not be a flat reconstruction of the book yet would have the same conceptual horizon. With the same story of crossed boundaries: between good and evil, youth and maturity, rules and when they’re broken".
