Wajda, Tornatore and Ruzowitzky in the running

In a second stage of pre-selection, nine films have been chosen as contenders for the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, of which three are European: Stefan Ruzowitzky's The Counterfeiter [+see also:

The shortlist of five nominees will be announced on January 22 and the ceremony is scheduled for February 24.

The other pre-selected titles are Sergei Bodrov's Mongol (Kazakhstan), Nikita Mikhalkov's 12 (Russia), Srdjan Golubovic's The Trap (Serbia), Cao Hamburger's The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (Brazil), Denys Arcand's Days of Darkness (Canada) and Joseph Cedar's Beaufort (Israel).
