Persepolis, biopics and local docs

Of the 11 titles on release in Italy today, eight are European productions. The only exceptions are US film Rendition by Gavin Hood (Eagle Pictures, 160 screens), Doug Liman’s Jumper (an action movie set in Rome, among many other locations, and distributed by Fox on 350 screen) and Vantage Point (Sony, 303 screens), made in America by Ireland’s Pete Travis.

The top two films are vastly different yet are both adaptations of autobiographical novels: the comedy Il mattino ha l’oro in bocca [+see also:

(“The Early Bird Catches the Worm”) by Francesco Patierno, distributed by Medusa on 261 prints (see news), and gangster movie Fine pena mai by Davide Barletti and Lorenzo Conte, released by Mikado on 87 screens (see news).

Other anticipated titles are Franco Brogi Taviani’s African-set documentary Forse Dio è malato (Istituto Luce, 5 prints – see news) and indie filmmaker Louis Nero’s fourth feature, La rabbia [+see also:

(Altrofilm, 30 screens), a story of a young director struggling to make his first film. Young lead Nico Rogner is flanked by a surprising cast that includes Franco Nero (who also produced), Lou Castel, Faye Dunaway and Philippe Leroy.

(UK/US/Italy) by British filmmaker Marc Evans is being distributed by its Italian co-producer Fandango, run by Domenico Procacci.
