CANNES 2008 Events

From Tarantino to Jarmusch

by

Independent US directors will have place of honour this year at the 61st edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25).

Sean Penn – who is to head the jury of the official competition – will be joined by Quentin Tarantino, who will give the traditional Cinema Lesson, following in the footsteps of Martin Scorsese, Stephen Frears, Nanni Moretti, Wong Kar Wai and Sydney Pollack.

The Society of Film Directors, who organise the Directors’ Fortnight (which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year), will present the Golden Coach award to Jim Jarmush at its opening.

This prize is awarded to directors for the innovative quality of their films, as well as their boldness and intransigence in the direction and production processes. Created in 2002, the award has previously honoured Alain Cavalier, David Cronenberg, Ousmane Sembene, Nanni Moretti, Clint Eastwood and Jacques Rozier.

Finally, the postponement until Wednesday, April 23 of the press conference for the announcement of the 2008 Cannes Festival official selection has led to changes for the parallel selections. The International Critics’ Week (SIC) will unveil its programme on Thursday, April 24 and the Directors’ Fortnight on Friday, April 25.
