Documenta Madrid underway

The 15th edition of Documenta Madrid (May 2-11), the festival of documentary films, is larger than ever, with a line-up of around 300 films, including 105 titles in official competition.

Continuing its focus on “the social, cultural, economic, artistic and environmental realities affecting today’s world”, the festival’s main section, Original Documentary Filmmaking, features 53 films (19 features and 34 shorts). Other competitive sections include Documentary Reporting (27 titles) and the National Competition (25 Spanish productions).

European documentaries are well represented and include Martín Sola’s Caja cerrada (“Closed Box”, Spain); Raphael Mathié’s Combalimon (France); Andrey Paounov’s The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories (Bulgaria); Arto Halonen’s Shadow of the Holy Book [+see also:

(Denmark/Finland/Switzerland); Adina Pintilie’s Don’t Get Me Wrong (Romania); and Joerg Hommer’s A Walk on the Edge of Democracy (Germany).

The festival will also host some impressive special programmes and retrospectives, such as the one dedicated to the documentaries of Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni; Intimate Elegies, in which masters Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini reflect on cinema and the role of the director; and Looking Back, which looks at May 1968 and the Madrid Movement.

Finally, there will also be retrospectives dedicated to Martin and Osa Johnson, German director Harun Farocki and French filmmaker Nicolas Philibert; as well as special programmes devoted to South American and Arab documentary filmmaking.
