Documenta Madrid prize-winners unveiled

European films scooped double honours at the Documenta Madrid festival, whose 15th edition closed on May 11.

The first prize in the main competition – entitled Original Documentary Filmmaking – went to Andrey Paounov’s Bulgarian film The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories, while the second prize was awarded to Neasa Ní Chianáin’s UK title Fairytale of Kathmandu.

Other prize-winners in this section were Martín Solá’s Spanish film Caja cerrada (“Closed Box”), which won the Special Jury Prize, and Uruguayan director Mario Handler’s Decile a Mario que no vuelva (“Tell Mario Not To Return”), which picked up the Audience Award.

Wolfram Huke’s German title Stiller Abtrag received the award for Best Short Film.

In the other two sections – Documentary Reporting and National Competition – top awards went, respectively, to Lucía Gajá Ferrer’s Mexican film My Life Inside and Iván García Rodríguez’s Spanish film La sangre tibia del hombre (“Man’s Lukewarm Blood”).
