Viviane Reding launches Media Mundus

by

The European Union is studying a new programme, entitled Media Mundus, to reinforce film and audiovisual partnerships between Europe and countries from other continents.

It was announced this morning, on the occasion of the sixth Europe Day, at Cannes by Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for Information, Society and Media.

With a €2m budget, Media Mundus will consolidate relations between the European market and those of other countries. "Today, we have to open our borders," Reding told the press, "and create strong joint ventures between the European industry and the rest of the world".

The press conference followed a meeting between European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and 13 European Ministers of Culture, who encouraged the EC "to pursue the project of promoting collaborations with other countries". At the end of the meeting, the directors of Cineuropa.org presented the European film portal, co-financed by the MEDIA Programme, to the ministers.
