European Commission wants to extend public monies for cinema
European Commissioners Neelie Kroes (Competition) and Viviane Reding (Information, Society and Media) are proposing that the European Commission extend public monies allocated for cinema in Europe for three years, until 2012.
The current system that authorises state funding, generally forbidden by Brussels, benefits from an extension for culture. The three-year extension would allow for a more in-depth examination of both territoriality clauses (which allow certain member countries to condition granting financing for up to 80% of films produced in their territory) and new phenomena such as newfound support for digital production and distribution.
