Cantet’s The Class crowned Palme d’Or

film profile] (see news). The last French director to win the coveted prize was Maurice Pialat in 1987, for Under Satan’s Sun.
The Class is Cantet’s fourth feature. The 47-year-old director won the New Directors Award at San Sebastian in 1999, as well as the Cesar for Best Debut Feature and the Louis Delluc Award for Human Resources.
Cantet also received the Golden Lion in the Cinema of the Present section at Venice in 2001 with Time Out, before being selected in official competition at Venice in 2005 with Heading South [+see also:

The filmmaker’s four films were all produced by Haut et Court, who will release The Class domestically on October 15. International sales for the film are being managed successfully by Memento.
